Southwestern food has made quite a place for itself even in the Northern America in the past decade. This is mostly due in a large part to the efforts of the talented chefs who have been able to combine successfully the elements of Spanish, Native American and Mexican cultures in their restaurants. The chefs usually take the native ingredients and turn them into the nation’s culinary trends. Cuisine of the Southwestern United States is actually food which is styled after the rustic cooking of the states in the Southwestern America. Southwestern cuisine comprises a fusion of recipes for different thing that might have been eaten by Spanish colonial settlers, the Texan cowboys, the Native Americans, and Mexicans throughout the post-Columbian era; the southwestern cuisine offers a great diversity throughout the Southwestern states.
Southwestern cuisine is quite similar to Mexican cuisine but like the Western European cuisine it involves larger cuts of meat, and less use of tripe, brain, and other parts that are not considered very desirable in the United States of America. It is slightly similar to Mexican cuisine, because of its use of spices (particularly the Chile, or Chili pepper) and the beans (frijoles), which are cooked in a variety of manners. Some well known south western combinations are: Chili con carne, fajitas, certain kinds of Chiles rellenos (stuffed chilies), and various steak-chili. In this type of cuisine the term "chili" generally refers to a thick stew or soup prepared with beans and meat, while "Chile" refers to the peppers that grow in this region and have been grown for thousands of years by the native people.
Some of the few famous southwestern dishes are: Salsa, Chili con carne, Rattlesnake fillet, Colorado burrito, Burrito, Rice and beans, Chile relleno , Stuffed peppers ,King Ranch Chicken, Taquitos , Tacos, Nachos, Menudo, Sopapillas, Pozole, Taco salad, Chimichanga and Fajitas. Burrito or taco de harina is an amazingly scrumptious type of food found in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. The basic concept is that a flour tortilla that has been lightly grilled or steamed is wrapped or folded around a filling, to soften it and make it more pliable. Mexicans usually use refried beans, Mexican rice, or meat as the only fillings and the tortilla are smaller in size. To cope up with the taste bud of Americans of the United States fillings generally include a combination of ingredients such as Mexican rice, beans, lettuce, salsa, meat, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream. One of the traditional Mexican dish is taco which is actually a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. Variable fillings like beef, mutton, shellfish, vegetables and cheese can be used.
The most famous specialty of southwestern food is the Salsa which may refer to any type of sauce however in the American English it is usually used to refer to the spicy; often tomato based hot sauces typical of Hispanic cuisine. The salsas are most commonly used as dips.
